Getting Started with the Windows Live Alerts SDK


This SDK is intended for developers familiar with Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) who want to programmatically integrate with the Alerts notification service and administration tasks that are not available using the Windows Live Alerts web site.

Target Audience & Scenarios

This SDK is intended for developers familiar with Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) who want to programmatically integrate with the Alerts notification service and administration tasks that are not available using the Windows Live Alerts web site, including:

  • Add/Remove groups
  • Publication sign-up
  • Subscribe/Unsubscribe end-users
  • Deliver messages
  • Inquire about user subscriptions
  • Inquire about available groups 

This SDK should be used in scenarios where:

Subscription management requires customization beyond simple category subscriptions. For example, the subscription management that allows user to query for information that would eventually be triggered.

The information triggering notifications is not currently published via a RSS feed and a RSS based triggers would be inappropriate for the scenario being developed.

Note: if the information is currently available via an RSS feed then you should use the zero development solution for Windows Live Alerts as provided at http://signup.alerts.live.com

You are a developer with knowledge of using SOAP

You are a developer comfortable with the developer level MSDN forum based support. This is currently the only support provided for the Windows Live Alerts SDK. SDK related questions can be posted to the Messenger development forum on MSDN or http://dev.live.com.

To get started please provide the following information to alertsdk@microsoft.com:

  • Site Name (This name will appear on the screens hosted by Alerts).
  • List of partner IP Addresses for Development and Production machines (Live Alerts uses IP Filtering for SDK implementations).
  • List the languages that signup experience:
